Check out any old
Hollywood Spaghetti Western movie and you will find the simple poncho being a
ubiquitous part. Ponchos are a very common garment in Latin America as well as Mexico and are jokingly called the
national costume. A poncho can be regarded as the simplest as well as among the
oldest garment known to man. Make a hole in the middle of a normal rectangular
blanket and put that over your head and voila! You have a poncho.
Today the simple
poncho is making a comeback in fashion circuits worldwide. Its simplicity is
its biggest strength and this also allows designers ample opportunity to
experiment on it. They can add frills, make a niece graphic design, try new
colours or create an open weave with that- the possibilities are huge. The heavy
ponchos are passé-they have been replaced with delicate and light fabrics with
lots of embroidery, beads, colours, etc. There are also cashmere ponchos that have
become a huge hit among fashion conscious ladies. These ponchos are light,
smooth and can be mixed with a lot of garments, especially those casual jeans. Not
only casual, ponchos can be teamed up with that little black dress for events
or gatherings too.
Ponchos are so adaptable
that you can use them in every season. A thick poncho can be used in winter as
it will double up as a blanket or a cover to provide warmth. In summers a
poncho of light fabric can act as a cover against the sun’s glare and also be a
summer dress.
Such is the ease
of wearing a poncho that people, especially ladies are opting for it instead of
regular garments. Not only ladies, even men are picking up the style as it
gives a rough manly look when teamed up with regular dresses.
